Robert Redford directs an entertaining and
intriguing look at the television quiz show scandals of the 50s. Herbie Stempel
(John Turturro) is a seemingly brilliant game show player, knowing every answer
and returning to the show as reigning quiz champ week after week. When the producers start to worry that audiences will tire of Stempel who, after
all,
is not particularly photogenic they set up a ringer, handsome Charles Van
Doren (Ralph Fiennes). Van Doren has everything a television producer could
dream of: good looks, impressive family, charm everything, except all the
right answers. But with a few clandestine moves, the producers provide the
needed answers in advance, guaranteeing their high ratings. The ensuing scandal
led to a Congressional investigation of television standards and practices. Based on a true story.
